macOS 27 Gave Spotlight a Real AI Assistant. Does It Replace Recento?

Golden Gate put a conversational Siri inside Spotlight, with access to your mail, messages, and photos for context. Here is exactly what that changes, and the specific job it still doesn't touch.

Quick answer: No, not for the job Recento actually does. Siri AI in Spotlight is a real, free upgrade if what you want is to ask a question and get an answer, including one pulled from your own Mail, Messages, or Photos. It has no recent-files view, no recent-screenshots view, no clipboard history, and no drag-and-drop, which is the entire job Recento is built around. The two aren't competing for the same task. If you want a conversational assistant, Siri AI is genuinely better than anything that came before it on Mac. If you want to grab the file, screenshot, or clipboard item from a minute ago and drop it into what you're working on, Recento still does that, and Siri AI doesn't attempt to.

Disclosure: Recento is made by 1dot.ai, the publisher of this article, so we have a commercial interest in it. Every claim about Siri AI below is checked against Apple's own documentation and independent reporting published between September 14 and October 21, 2026 (Macworld, TechCrunch, and others, linked near the bottom), cross-checked against each other rather than taken from one source. This session does not have access to a Mac running macOS 27 to test Siri AI directly, which is disclosed here rather than glossed over.

Siri AI vs. Recento, Side by Side

These aren't really competitors. One is a conversational assistant built into the operating system; the other is a focused overlay for getting back to something you had a moment ago. Laid out side by side, the gap in what each one is actually for becomes obvious fast.

What Actually Shipped With macOS 27

Apple released macOS 27 "Golden Gate" on September 14, 2026. Its headline change to search is a rebuilt, more conversational Siri that Apple and the press have taken to calling Siri AI. Press Cmd-Space to open Spotlight, and the field now reads "Search or Ask" instead of a plain search box. Type a short query and Spotlight behaves exactly as it always has: instant, on-device results for apps, files, and settings. Type a full question and press Return, and the request routes to Siri AI instead.

Once there, Siri AI can do three things a search box never could. It can answer using current web information, the same way asking a question out loud to Siri always could. It can look at whatever is currently on your screen and answer a question about it. And it can pull from your own Mail, Messages, and Photos when a question specifically calls for personal context, TechCrunch's own testing describes it locating a membership ID or a trip's details this way, without the person opening the email or document themselves.

Hardware, Language, and Beta Status

Siri AI requires Apple Intelligence, and Apple Intelligence requires an Apple Silicon Mac from 2020 or later, among them the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, and MacBook Neo lines. macOS 27 dropped Intel support entirely, so an Intel Mac is locked out at the operating-system level before Apple Intelligence eligibility even enters into it. The on-device models behind Apple Intelligence take roughly 7 to 10GB of storage.

Siri AI shipped speaking English only. Apple's own announcement named French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish as due in October 2026. As of this check, October 21, 2026, Apple had seeded a release candidate for macOS 27.2, the update expected to carry that language expansion, but had not yet shipped it to the public. If your device or Siri language isn't English today, Siri AI's personal-context features are not available to you yet, full stop.

Worth knowing before you rely on it
A little over five weeks after launch, the feature Apple promised for October had not shipped as of this check. That's not unusual for a point release, but it's a reason to treat Siri AI as still settling in rather than a finished, mature feature with a long track record, the same caution worth applying to any software less than two months old.

What Siri AI Does Well

  • It answers a real question, not just a keyword. Asking "what's the boiling point of ethanol" or "summarize this PDF I have open" gets a direct answer instead of a list of search results to click through.
  • It can see what's on your screen. Ask about something currently open and it reads the screen's content to answer, without you needing to copy or describe it first.
  • Personal context genuinely saves steps. A question like "when is my flight" pulling the answer straight from a confirmation email, rather than you opening Mail and searching for it yourself, is a real and useful shortcut when it works.
  • Normal search is unaffected. A short query still returns Spotlight's familiar instant, on-device results. Nothing about the new "Ask" path slows down the case most people use Spotlight for most often.
  • It costs nothing extra. If your Mac already qualifies for Apple Intelligence, this is a free capability, not a purchase or a subscription.

What It Still Doesn't Touch

Every gap below exists because Siri AI was built to answer questions, not to help you get back to something you were just looking at. That's not a flaw in the feature. It's simply a different job than the one Recento was built for.

  • No recent-files view. Siri AI can tell you about a file's contents if you ask, but it has no browsable list of "what you just had open," the thing Recento shows the instant you press its hotkey. (Spotlight's own Files category, Cmd-2, is a separate feature that predates Siri AI and isn't part of it.)
  • No recent-screenshots view. Nothing about Siri AI knows what screenshot you took a minute ago, let alone surfaces it for a quick drag-and-drop.
  • No clipboard history of its own. Spotlight's separate clipboard tab (Cmd-4, added back in macOS 26) still exists, but it is unrelated to Siri AI and isn't where this feature's capabilities live.
  • No drag-and-drop. An answer from Siri AI is text on screen. There is nothing to drag out of it into another app the way you can drag a file or image straight out of Recento's overlay.
  • Personal-context access is broad. To answer a question using your mail, messages, or photos, Siri AI needs standing access to those sources. A Hacker News discussion reported a "Siri AI.app" process still visible in Activity Monitor after the user disabled Siri and Apple Intelligence, an anecdotal report we could not independently verify, but one worth knowing about if you're deciding how much access to grant.
  • It's new. English-only at launch, with a promised October language expansion not yet shipped as of this check, and it requires a 2020-or-later Apple Silicon Mac with Apple Intelligence turned on.

Which One Should You Use?

You want to ask a question and get an answer
Siri AI
That's exactly what it was built for, and it's free on a Mac that supports it.
You want the screenshot you took a minute ago, fast
Recento
Siri AI has no recent-screenshots view at all. Recento shows it the instant you hit your hotkey.
You want to drag a file or image straight into another app
Recento
Siri AI's answers are text on screen with nothing to drag. Recento supports drag-and-drop natively.
You'd rather not give an assistant standing access to Mail and Photos
Recento
Recento's recent-files, screenshot, and clipboard overlay needs none of those permissions to work.
You're on an Intel Mac, or not on macOS 27 yet
Recento
Works on macOS 11 Big Sur and later, Apple Silicon and Intel. Siri AI needs Apple Silicon from 2020 on, running macOS 27.
Your Siri language isn't English yet
Recento
Recento doesn't care what language you work in. Siri AI's personal-context features are English-only until the promised expansion ships.
Bottom Line
Siri AI is a genuine, free upgrade to what Spotlight can do, and the personal-context answers are useful when they land. It is also five weeks old, English-only while a promised language update sits unshipped, Apple-Silicon-only, and built around answering a question rather than getting you back to a recent file, screenshot, or clipboard item. Recento was built for exactly that second job, and nothing about Siri AI changes whether you still need it.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Siri AI in Spotlight replace Recento?
No, because the two solve different problems. Siri AI answers a question you ask out loud or type, pulling from the web or from personal context across Mail, Messages, and Photos. Recento is not a question-answering tool at all. It's a hotkey overlay that shows the file, screenshot, or clipboard item you had a moment ago, so you can drag it straight into whatever you're working on without typing a search query. Someone who wants to ask "when is my flight" is well served by Siri AI. Someone who wants to grab the screenshot they took 30 seconds ago and drop it into a Slack message is still better served by Recento.
What is Siri AI in macOS 27 Golden Gate, exactly?
It's the rebuilt, more conversational Siri Apple shipped with macOS 27 "Golden Gate" on September 14, 2026. Press Cmd-Space to open Spotlight and you now see a "Search or Ask" field. Type a normal search and Spotlight behaves as before. Type a full question and press Return, and it routes to Siri AI instead, which can answer using current web information, explain something visible on your screen, or pull from your own Mail, Messages, and Photos when the question calls for it.
Is Siri AI in Spotlight still in beta?
At launch, yes in an important sense: Siri AI shipped English-only, with Apple's own announcement naming French, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, and Spanish as due in October 2026. As of this check (October 21, 2026), Apple had seeded a release candidate for macOS 27.2, the update expected to carry that language expansion, but had not yet shipped it publicly. Treat the current build as still settling in, not a finished, stable feature with a long track record.
Does Siri AI work on Intel Macs?
No. Siri AI requires Apple Intelligence, which requires an Apple Silicon Mac from 2020 or later. macOS 27 itself dropped Intel support entirely, so an Intel Mac cannot install the OS this feature ships in, regardless of Apple Intelligence eligibility. Recento, by contrast, runs on macOS 11 Big Sur and later on both Apple Silicon and Intel, so it is the only one of the two that an Intel Mac can use at all.
Can Siri AI see my recent files, screenshots, or clipboard the way Recento does?
Not in the way Recento presents them. Siri AI can answer a question that happens to require information from a file, an email, or a photo if you ask it directly, but it has no dedicated "recent files," "recent screenshots," or "clipboard history" view you browse the way you would in Recento's overlay, and it has no drag-and-drop. Spotlight's separate Files category (Cmd-2) and its own clipboard tab (Cmd-4, added in macOS 26) still exist independently of Siri AI and are closer to what Recento does, though neither matches Recento's single combined overlay or its drag-and-drop support.
Is Siri AI's personal context safe and private?
Apple says personal-context answers are generated using on-device processing. That said, it's worth being specific about what people have actually reported rather than taking the marketing at face value. A Hacker News discussion (anecdotal, not an Apple statement) described a "Siri AI.app" process still appearing in Activity Monitor after the user had turned Siri and Apple Intelligence off, and several commenters compared the personal-context feature's reach across Mail, Messages, and Photos to Microsoft's Recall. We could not independently verify either claim. If you would rather not have an assistant with standing access to your mail and photos at all, Recento's clipboard and recent-files overlay needs none of those permissions to do its job.
Can I use Siri AI and Recento together?
Yes, there's no conflict. Siri AI lives inside Spotlight on Cmd-Space. Recento uses its own separate, configurable hotkey. Plenty of people will end up asking Siri AI a quick question and, a minute later, hitting Recento's hotkey to drag a recent screenshot into a different app. They answer different questions and don't compete for the same keystroke unless you've specifically rebound them to clash.
Does Siri AI cost anything extra?
No. It's included free with macOS 27 on a Mac that meets the Apple Intelligence hardware requirements. Recento is also free to start, with up to 5 recent files, 1 custom filter, and the 5 most recent clipboard items at no cost, and a one-time $19.99 lifetime upgrade (a launch price, down from $30) that removes the file cap and adds unlimited filters, favorites, full clipboard history, and clipboard bookmarks. Neither is a subscription.
Does asking Siri AI a question in Spotlight slow down a normal app search?
No. Apple kept the two paths separate: typing a short query still returns the instant, on-device app and file results Spotlight has always given, and only a full question routed to "Ask" invokes Siri AI. Some reviewers, including Macworld, have argued the new "Search or Ask" framing makes the everyday case feel more cluttered than the old single-purpose Spotlight field, which is a fair critique of the interface even though the underlying instant search itself still works.
