What's New in Apple Notes on macOS 27 Golden Gate (Does It Fix the Export Bug?)

Copy as Markdown, Section Links, and a divider line all landed with Golden Gate. Here is exactly what each one does, what we could not confirm about drawing on Mac, and whether the documented bulk-export bug is any closer to fixed.

macOS 27 Golden Gate, released Sept 14, 2026·Checked Oct 17, 2026·8 min read
Quick answer: macOS 27 Golden Gate added three confirmed, genuinely useful Notes features: a Copy as Markdown command, Section Links for jumping to a heading inside a long note, and a divider line. None of them require Apple Intelligence or an internet connection. Reports listing "drawing from a Mac" as new for this release did not, on our check, describe anything beyond drawing tools that already existed through Sidecar or Continuity Sketch, so we are not claiming trackpad handwriting recognition shipped here. More importantly for anyone who exports notes in bulk: the documented Markdown export-corruption bug, duplicated lines or blank files on large exports, is still present as far as we can confirm, five weeks after Golden Gate shipped.

Editorial note: 1dot.ai makes Apple Notes Exporter Pro, mentioned further down. Every claim about macOS 27's Notes changes here is drawn from Apple's own support documentation and independent coverage from 9to5Mac and MacRumors, cross-checked against each other, not taken from a single source. This session does not have access to a Mac running macOS 27 to test every feature by hand, which is disclosed here rather than glossed over, and is exactly why the "drawing from a Mac" claim below is flagged as unconfirmed instead of stated as fact.

What Actually Shipped for Notes in macOS 27

Apple released macOS 27 "Golden Gate" on September 14, 2026, alongside iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, and Notes picked up the same handful of changes across all three platforms rather than a Mac-specific set. None of them touch Apple Intelligence, sync, or storage. They are editing and export conveniences, and the three we could confirm are small enough that most coverage mentioned them in a single paragraph each.

The Three Confirmed Changes

Feature 1

Copy as Markdown

Select any block of formatted text in a note, open the Edit menu (or right-click), and choose Copy as Markdown. The selection goes onto your clipboard as plain Markdown syntax, headings as #, bold as **text**, lists as - items, instead of rich text.

It works in reverse too: paste Markdown-formatted text into a note and Notes converts the syntax into actual formatting rather than dumping literal asterisks and pound signs onto the page.

Edit menu, on any selected text
Feature 2

Section Links

Select a heading or subheading, open Add Link, and pick Link to Section. That heading becomes a jump target, and you can place a link to it anywhere else in the same note, the same idea as an anchor link in a Markdown document.

The obvious use is a short table of contents pinned near the top of a long note, so you can jump to "Budget" or "Action Items" without scrolling through everything above it.

Add Link > Link to Section
Feature 3

Insert Divider Line

A new command that inserts a horizontal rule to separate sections of a note visually. It is a small addition, more useful paired with Section Links in a long note than on its own.

Where these are genuinely enough on their own
If you keep a handful of long reference notes, meeting notes, or a running journal and occasionally want a clean Markdown copy of one, Copy as Markdown and Section Links cover that for free with nothing to install. This is a real, honest improvement for that specific habit, not a reason by itself to buy anything.

The "Drawing from a Mac" Claim We Could Not Confirm

Several iOS 27 Notes feature roundups list an item along the lines of "Draw from a Mac" in their table of contents. We went looking for what that actually means and came up short on specifics. Apple's own Notes guide documents sketching in a note on Mac, through the Markup palette, using Apple Pencil over Sidecar from a connected iPad, or Continuity Sketch from an iPhone or iPad, but none of that is new to macOS 27. Those drawing paths existed well before Golden Gate.

What we did not find is a source describing new trackpad-to-ink handwriting recognition built directly into Notes on Mac, the kind that would let you draw with just a trackpad and no connected iOS device. If that exists, we have not found anyone documenting it, and we would rather say so plainly than repeat a feature-list bullet point we could not verify.

What this means for you
If you were expecting new native trackpad handwriting in Notes specifically because of macOS 27, treat that as unconfirmed. The drawing tools that do work on Mac, Markup palette plus a connected iPhone or iPad, worked exactly the same way before this release.

Does This Fix the Export-Corruption Bug?

No, as far as we can confirm. A documented bug in Apple's own File > Export as Markdown feature, duplicated lines or entirely blank files on a large bulk export, has been reported since October 2025 and was corroborated again in January 2026 on macOS Tahoe 26.2, affecting roughly 300 of 1,190 exported files in that report. We cover the full detail of that bug, including reproduction notes and safe-export steps, in a dedicated piece.

We re-checked on October 17, 2026, five weeks after Golden Gate's September 14 release, for any changelog entry, support note, or independent report stating Apple fixed it. We found none. That does not prove the bug is unfixed in every build, only that no public source we could find says otherwise, which is the honest limit of what this kind of check can establish without a Mac running macOS 27 in front of us.

If you bulk-export a large Apple Notes library, the safest approach is still the one from our dedicated bug post: export in batches well under 100 notes, and open a handful of the resulting files afterward to confirm line counts and content look right before deleting anything.

Where Exporter Pro Still Does More

None of macOS 27's three Notes changes touch bulk export at all. Copy as Markdown works on one selection at a time, to the clipboard, not to files on disk. File > Export as Markdown still flattens every note into one destination folder regardless of which Apple Notes folder it came from, a limitation we detail in our macOS 26 native export comparison, and that limitation is unchanged in macOS 27.

Apple Notes Exporter Pro ($9.99, one-time, with lifetime updates) reads notes directly instead of going through Apple's export pipeline, which is also why the documented corruption bug does not apply to it: it is a different code path end to end. It preserves folder structure on a bulk export, and exports to PDF, Word, HTML, plain text, JSON, RTF, EPUB, LaTeX, and JSONL in addition to Markdown, none of which Apple's own export menu offers.

None of this makes Apple's free improvements pointless. For a single note copied into a chat window or a quick Markdown paste, Copy as Markdown is faster than opening a separate app. The two tools solve different problems: one note at a time versus an entire library at once, with folder structure intact either way.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is new in Apple Notes on macOS 27 Golden Gate?
Three confirmed changes: a "Copy as Markdown" command in the Edit menu that converts a selection of rich text into Markdown on the clipboard (and the reverse, pasting Markdown text converts it back into formatted rich text), a "Link to Section" option under Add Link that creates a jump-link to any heading in the current note, and a new Insert Divider Line command that adds a horizontal rule. None of the three require an internet connection or Apple Intelligence.
Does macOS 27 add trackpad handwriting to Apple Notes?
We could not confirm this. Several iOS 27 feature roundups list a 'Draw from a Mac' item for Notes, but none we checked describe new trackpad-to-ink handwriting recognition inside Notes itself, and Apple's own Notes guide documents sketching in a note without stating whether it is new to this release. Drawing in Notes on Mac through the Markup palette, using Apple Pencil over Sidecar from a connected iPad or Continuity Sketch from an iPhone or iPad, already existed before macOS 27. If true native trackpad handwriting recognition inside Notes exists, we have not found a source confirming it, and we are not going to claim it works until we do.
Does "Copy as Markdown" replace the need for a dedicated Markdown exporter?
For a single note you want to paste into a Markdown file or a chat window, yes, it's one menu click and nothing else to install. It does not replace a bulk exporter for a reason that has nothing to do with Markdown conversion quality: it copies to the clipboard, one note at a time, so you still need to open each note, run the command, and paste it somewhere yourself. There is no batch version of Copy as Markdown.
What are Section Links and how do I add one?
Select the text of a heading or subheading inside a note, open the Edit menu or right-click menu, choose Add Link, then Link to Section. That creates a clickable link elsewhere in the same note that jumps straight to that heading. It is useful for building an informal table of contents at the top of a long note with many headings, the same job a Markdown document uses anchor links for.
Did macOS 27 fix the Apple Notes Markdown export bug?
No, as far as we can confirm. The documented bug, duplicated lines or completely blank files when bulk-exporting a large number of notes through File > Export as Markdown, has been reported since October 2025 and was corroborated again in January 2026 on macOS Tahoe 26.2. We checked again on October 17, 2026, five weeks after macOS 27 Golden Gate's September 14 release, and found no Apple changelog entry, support note, or independent report stating it was fixed. Treat it as still present until you have personally verified otherwise on your own exported files.
Does Apple Notes Exporter Pro have the same export bug?
It has not been reported to, and the mechanism would need to be different even if a bug existed, since Exporter Pro does not use Apple's File > Export as Markdown feature at all. It reads notes directly and writes each file through its own export code, which is also why it can preserve folder structure on a bulk export and Apple's native export still cannot.
Does Copy as Markdown preserve checklists and folder structure?
Checklists convert to standard Markdown task syntax reasonably well in our reading of the feature description, the same as the macOS 26 native file export already handled. Folder structure is not something Copy as Markdown touches at all, since it copies one note's content to the clipboard rather than writing files to a destination folder. That limitation belongs to File > Export as Markdown, covered in our separate piece on the macOS 26 native export, not to this newer clipboard feature.
Is Siri able to write or organize Apple Notes on macOS 27?
Apple added Siri-generated note content as part of this same Notes update cycle, but coverage we found ties it to the iPhone 15 Pro and newer specifically, not to Mac. If you are looking for that feature on a Mac running macOS 27, we found no source confirming it exists there yet.

The Bottom Line

macOS 27 Golden Gate gave Apple Notes three small, genuine editing conveniences: Copy as Markdown, Section Links, and a divider line. They are worth using the moment you update, and they cost nothing. What they did not touch is the thing that actually matters for anyone managing more than a few dozen notes: bulk export still flattens folder structure, and the documented corruption bug on large exports is still, as far as we could confirm, unfixed. If your Notes workflow is a handful of notes copied out occasionally, Apple's own tools now cover you well. If it is hundreds of notes you need exported intact, with their organization preserved and without gambling on a known bug, that is still a job for a dedicated tool.
